Dr Binayak Sen Speaks

With a deep sense of anguish I accept that more often than not I am a dishonest Broadcaster. Its no revelation that NEWS agencies/channels/News papers don't talk about real people and real issues.

India is not Delhi, Mumbai,Kolkata, Chennai and B'lore. We are not fights between SRK and Salman Khan. We are more!!

We are questions. And god forbid if we get curioser and curioser concerns that we have today will change so drastically "life as we understand it today will cease to exist"

Journalists, Doctors, political activists ...we were people who had wanted to do so much for our people or ourselves...or for our world!! But we have cheated the larger world and the larger cause of Mankind for immediate gains & for immediate 'us'.

But there are some who have been honest to their vision-

One of them showed us recently that beautiful dreams are often seen in extreme darkness!!That you can't solve issues around violence by ignoring the 'ignored', neglecting the 'neglected' and violating the 'conventionally violated'.

Violence inflicted on the 'rich' and the 'famous' is violence against our countrymen. But the PRIVILEDGED are not the only ones who deserve a life of dignity.

To address VIOLENCE we need to stretch ourselves a little more than just conviniently running nursing homes, making news for sponsors and being busy with conference calls.

This is to say a BIG THANKS TO DR BINAYAK SEN for shaking me out of my slumber.

This is a Thank You note from a journo! Bringing you his words.

Dr Binayak Sen on Health being a human right!!
"PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO HEALTH CARE.THE STATE CAN PROVIDE THE PEOPLE WITH A PROPER FRAMEWORK OF HEALTHCARE RELATED ACTIVITIES.INCREASING PROPORTION OF PEOPLE SHOULD BE ENGAGED IN THE PROPAGATION OF HEALTH CARE RELATED ISSUES.NOW THERE ARE IMPORTANT NORMS AND LEGAL BACKING FOR HEALTH CARE.CONCEPTUAL ADVANCEMENT SHOULD BE MADE FOR BETTER HEALTCARE FACILITIES."

Dr Binayak Sen on MAOIST VIOLENCE IN THE CHATTISGARH REGION AND STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE

"WE ARE AGAINST ANY FORM OF VIOLENCE AND BREECH OF HUMAN RIGHTS.IN AREAS OF CHATTISGARH VIOLENCE IS OCCURRING FROM MAOISTS SIDE LEADING TO DEATHS OF PEOPLE IN THE GOVERNMENT. AS A HUMAN RIGHTS WORKER WE ARE AGAINST ANY FORM OF VIOLENCE.THE CYCLE OF GOVERNMENT VIOLENCE AND MAOIST VIOLENCE IS COUNTER PRODUCTIVE.THE GOVERNMENT MUST NOT LEGITIMIZE VIOLENCE BASED SOLUTION.

MILITARY CONFRONTATION SHOULD BE REPLACED BY POLITICAL ENGAGEMENTS.WE ARE AGAINST MILITARY CONFRONTATION. WE ARE ALSO AGAINST STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE AGAINST THE POOR.THE POOR ARE NOT POOR BY DEFAULT BUT THERE HAS BEEN WIDESPREAD DISPLACEMENT OF RESOURCES.THE RESOURCES WHICH WERE INITIALLY AVAILABLE TO THEM ARE NOT ENJOYED BY THEM ANYMORE.WE WANT TO RESOLVE ALL CONFLICTS BY HOLDING PEACE TALKS."

He wants to resolve all conflicts by holding PEACE talks! He is against violence of all kinds...and that includes structural violence against poor people.

In the midst of neon lights, kebabs, beers, happy families and endless dreams to possess new cars and new houses perhaps we need to question who is actually violent? We definitely need to understand/question the origin of violence in a state. Why poor wo/men decide to get violent? and why rich are always so peaceful?
Why do some wo/men have to leave their homes, villages, farms and rivers when a factory or a Dam is supposed to bring happiness and prosperity to these very people?

Is it for the LARGER GOOD really that people in Narmada Valley or in Nandigram were asked to 'Sacrifice'/'Compromise'?

If it is for the larger good why do a large chunk of underpriviledged Indians get poorer after a DEVELOPMENT exercise? Why do the poor, the tribals, the villagers have to leave their homes for a metro junkie's computer and AC? Will Industrialists leave theit towns/homes/cities for the country for once? For better Industries and better electricity? What will they seek for their Rehab and do they really provide the same to the people who are ousted from their HUTS and COTTAGES?

Displacements,Migration, lack of health care, schools, food and education...lets atleast think and talk...and accept we are part of the violence...WE ARE THE TERRORISTS who pass by our countrymen tagging them as 'half wits', the terrorists who eat out every weekend while many of our country men die due to lack of health care... Let Nationalism begin for Nation's people! Let Human Resource be considered as the biggest resource. Let development and REFORMS be for the poorest of the poor citizen?? not 'just' for us...who have violated enough.

In our war against TERRORISM lets begin with understanding the TERRORIST within. Lets challenge the mainstream propoganda of 'VIOLENCE' and 'TERRORISM'. Lets begin by speaking for our families beyond our blood kith and kin?

Should we? Can we?

  1. Disturbing, yet super. Challenging, yet exciting. Complex, yet so much more motivating.

  2. Had Dr Binayak Sen been a celebrity, his stay in jail would not have lasted beyond few days. We have examples of Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt before us.

Media too cannot escape the blame. Upper middle class girl Arushi's murder hogs all limelight while that of poor family girl Shaheen recedes into oblivion. Paradoxes like these galore.

Voices are always raised, but even they too are selectively heard. Unity in diversity or diversity in diversity!

If pursued in right earnest, most of the issues plaguing the country would get a solution. But, the big question: is the country willing?

  3. voices are unheard many or rather most of the time. Thanks to media where only selective pulic is represented. issues of development, healt care, poverty, employment, corruption and lot many issues of everyday life are outdated and obsolete for the elite media in this country.
yet the faith stays...wil always stay,as we know struggle will win, there wil be change.when people in cities and towns and villages come together for similar causes and when we have more people oriented media things will change.
we struggle for that day and salute to people like Dr. Binayak sen.
your anxieties are not just yours but ours...
